From Electronic to Experimental: music evolves in China

Asia Scout | May 25th, 2007
The availability of various musical technology (like Dance Music Editor, Digital Filter, Apple, various software/plugin, Mixing Console Studio Equipment, Digital Voice Recorder”) is gradually bringing together the musical ideology and language of new generation. Without any systemic and professional music education, young people are even able to compose or mix music in their bedrooms.
Not alike general Electronic, Experimental Electronic is less commercial styles and considered as a breakthrough of Electronic. It not only includes music, but also sound-art like natural sounds (call of bird, insect, noise”.), live performances”.
When most youth are playing with Pop Electronic, Industrial Electronic, Electronic dance and Digital Hardcore , some indie pioneers are trying some alternative styles and gradually standing out through experiment:
- Wanfan makes electronic from Harshnoise to Ambient
- B6 plays with a wide range of creative styles such as industrial noise, Lo-fi noise
- MF3 has been called “the most prominent experimental act in China” by the US magazine, who mix lots of folk music (incl. Chuang Opera, lute”) in their work.
The potential direction of electronic forward is not very difficult to perceive from 2007 Beijing Midi Music Festival
Implications: Experimental electronic enables youth to turn their creative idea to make innovative art. The numerous styles of electronic indicates that China electronic is bound to evolve Microsound, Ambient and Soundscape (i.e. music style will change from harsh and fast to light, slow and gentle style) from Pop Electronic, Industrial Electronic, Electronic Dance and Digital Hardcore.
