The Taj Mahal has been a universally loved symbol of eternal love and devotion. It is an architectural marvel for sure but more than that it has caught the imagination and the hearts of millions of romantics for centuries now.
The Ancient Seven Wonders of the World represented the pinnacle of human achievement. Now though, only the Pyramids of Giza still exist from the old Wonders. The time is now right for the world to have seven New Wonders. And though many may think that the Taj Mahal has always been one of the Seven Wonders, that is not the case.
Launched in 2000 by the New 7 Wonders Society, a Swiss group with the preservation of man-made heritage close to its heart, the hunt was on for the New Seven Wonders Of The World, via the first global voting campaign. The campaign founder is Mr. Bernard Weber, Swiss author, film producer and aviator. IMCL, a Bhaskar Group company, has the exclusive media and marketing rights for the India leg of voting.
With strict rules like all nominations having to be man-made, be in an "acceptable" state of preservation and to have been completed by 2000, nominations were whittled down by public votes to 77 last year. Then a panel of architectural experts, chaired by former UNESCO chief Federico Mayor Zaragoza, shortened the list to 21.
The Taj, is one of those 21 wonders!The New 7 Wonders of the World will be announced during the Official Declaration ceremony in Lisbon, Portugal on Saturday, July 7, 2007 – 07.07.07.
