Jakarta’s retro pop darlings White Shoes & the Couples Company have been steadily building a name for themselves outside of Indonesia: from assorted write-ups in international music media [Rolling Stone, AMG], to playing gigs around the region's capitals [Singapore, Bangkok, KL]. Next port of call for the dandy-dressing sextet is Austin, Texas, the music capital of the world and home of the gynormous South by Southwest [SxSW] festival. White Shoes are one of only two Asian bands not from Japan or South Korea on the roll call of over 300 acts performing SxSW 2008; the other is also Indonesian: The S.I.G.I.T, from Bandung. More of an “industry showcase” for A&R and the music press than a music festival proper, SxSW has helped launch the careers of many fringe ” or just plain unknown ” bands, and we anticipate a charmed reaction to Jakarta’s most adored indie act generates when they hit the stage at the Habana Annex on Saturday 15 March.
