KL Remembers the King of Pop

Asia Scout | July 18th, 2009

It’s been three weeks since the sudden death of the King of Pop, and yet the world still mourns his passing. Regardless what age you are, you’ve got to admit that Michael Jackson has touched your life one way or another, either through his great music, his ingenious dance moves, his eccentric lifestyle or even his generosity that knows no bounds.

The world broke down into tears at the news of his tragic demise. Malaysian fans also felt that the musical universe lost a key melody. Radio stations played his tracks all day long, Twitter was abuzz with messages of heartbreak, blogs streams with posts of farewell to the irreplaceable legend, and many sat reminiscing the times when we would stare in awe at the TV set when his video clips would come on.

Three days after his passing, KLites flooded into one of KL’s major shopping malls where a candlelight vigil and tribute was held by Sony. A tribute video of what Jackson meant to many celebrities was played, following a string of his number one hits. Fans bonded through the music, and though many of them sat in front of the stage as strangers, by the time the first song was through, they were like one big family singing along to the songs they grew up with. Cheers erupted every time he moon-walked in a video, and tears fell as some songs touched the tender heartstrings of fans who knew that this gifted man’s life was far from happy, even though he gave joy to so many.

As the videos plays, organizers opened up a tribute wall where fans could leave notes. The wall would later be flown to the U.S., and delivered to the Jackson family.

Later, three Michael Jackson impersonators made their way onstage and performed some of his signature dance moves. One impersonator, known to many as MJ Nada, has been a local impersonator for some 20 years, and gave a brief speech that left some teary eyed.

The stage was also open for the public to perform. Some sang his songs and some did dance impersonations. The most impressive was a 12-year-old boy who got up on stage and confidently did a moonwalk.

At the end of the tribute, candles were lit and held up high as the fans swayed together and sang “You Are Not Alone”, “Man in the Mirror” and “Heal the World”.

The music world has lost its brightest star, one that can never be replaced. Rest in peace, Micheal Jackson. You will live on forever through your music and dance.
