Manila Design Week

Asia Scout | August 10th, 2009

For the first time in the Philippines, graphic designers and students will come together for Manila Design Week, which begins on August 8 and runs until August 15, 2009. Several events lined-up for this year’s MDW are the Creative Collaboration Exhibit, Versus Exhibit, and Graphika Manila Conference, to name a few.

Creative Collaboration brings together the biggest names in design and fashion. Exploring the theme “Beautiful Functional”, the two basic tenets of design, the fruits of this collaboration will be shown as a photography exhibit at Greenbelt 5, one of the most high-end malls in Manila.

Versus II Exhibit challenges graphic designers to create artworks that address the Millennium Development Goals. This year’s exhibit will hope to prove “that graphic design is an ever-evolving art form, and that as an engine of modern communication, it is an excellent platform for social change”. Proceeds from the exhibit will go to nonprofit organizations.

Since 2006, this event has attracted over 3,500 design students and professionals, and is one of the most influential art events in the industry.

Nokia is Manila Design Week’s official sponsor this year. Premier fashion and advertising publications, and a daily broadsheet will also cover this event.
