A lot of the new sites I’ve been using—as well as the old ones that I’m finally starting to understand how to use—serve an organizing purpose.
Take blog reading, for example: It can be hard to keep up with how much material is out there. After a long stint with Google Homepage to manage my blog reading, I am now using Netvibes. I like the colorful interface and the tabbed visual layout. I was using the Firefox add-on, although it doesn’t work well with the newest version of Firefox.
Flickr certainly isn’t new, but I’m using it more to organize the photos I take for school, my iPhone photos, etc. I use the Pro Account so I can make as many sets as I want. I also like the social aspect of it, where friends get updated when I add new photos and can make comments.
Delicious has been around for a while, but only recently did I really start using it. It helps me organize story ideas and keep track of things I want to learn about or return to later. I was teaching myself web design this summer through WordPress customization, so I used it to keep track of good tutorials as well as templates I liked and other cool design elements. It was an easy way for me to share this information with other people who wanted to learn about WordPress. I use the Firefox add-on—this is key!
Insta-Paper is more of an iPhone app than a website, but it allows you to bookmark articles online that you want to read later—that is, offline on your iPhone. For example, everyone talking about this Sarah Palin profile in Vanity Fair, but I don’t have time to read it. I click “read later,” and then the next time I plug my phone into my computer, it downloads, and I can read it on the subway or whenever I have downtime.
