DISTRICT 9 was excellent and cool due to its Australian-ness (digeridoos used as sound effects and the classic Dead Alive splatters). It also has Nigerian gangsters, which are somehow hip (images of African gangsters with baboons and cheetahs as pets posted and used often on the internet).
BADLANDS should not still be such a theme but it keeps being referenced by Smiths-worshipping hipsters and Americana influenced musicians. It is still very hip and fashionable and has an amazing marimba score.
WALKABOUT is another classic movie that seems to continue to be relevant. People are always asking if I have seen it. This also relates to my theory that Australian themes are cool.
ITALIAN GIALLOS are popular to reference particularly for their italo-disco suspense soundtracks. Italian horror films such as Dario Argento’s “Suspiria” and Fulci’s “The Church” were cool but now in order to get more obscure people watch old Italian crime dramas due to their stylish depictions of murder and sex.
