Gospel revisited

Old record players

Last year I bought a couple of old reconditioned Dansette record players which are valve based and make old records sound great. At the moment the things I listen to on it are things like Roy Orbison, Mahlia Jackson, Elvis, Love, Johnny Cash, Beatles, Stones, soul and weird old gospel music from places like Africa and Brazil on the Mississippi Records label.

I still listen to all the music I listened to when I was growing up so there’s still a lot of hardcore there. Black Flag, Poison Idea, Integrity, Born Against, Minor Threat, Judge… I can’t stand modern indie because it’s so trite and polished but I love older things like My Bloody Valentine, Felt / Denim and Spiritualized / Spacemen 3. My favourite new record is by The Almighty Defenders, which is the Black Lips / members of King Khan & BBQ playing gospel music.

I liked rap when I was younger and when it was angry stuff about killing cops, selling drugs and overthrowing the government. These days it’s people dressed as clowns using AutoTune and singing songs about how much they like to go bananas at the disco.
