Jakartans are known for seeking entertainment in big, air-conditioned malls. So it’s not that big of a stretch to imagine some getting bundled up to hit the ice skating rink at Mall Taman Anggrek.
Opened in August 1996, Sky Rink claims to be the biggest in Southeast Asia. It became a major hit for young folks to spend their weekends or holidays in. With 15 instructors and four supervisors, they keep their enthusiasts happy and well informed regarding techniques and safety. They also host the occasional professional figure skater, such as Jerico Lim, who is from the Philippines.
However, it’s usually just about cutting loose and having fun…
In June 2003, Jakarta Figure Skating Club was born from 60 smaller clubs around town. The increasing interest in this the last few years has inspired Perserosi (the Indonesian Skate Union) to include ice skating along with skateboarding and rollerskating.
