Flying Lotus in his Element
It seems that dubstep is really picking up the slack where drum’n'bass left off, and is stealing the thunder from techno and house as well. Leading the pack is Flying Lotus, whose dubstep defies boundaries and crosses genres, incorporating elements of downtempo, hip hop and ragga along with the signature deep long elastic basslines.
While North Americans gobble up their dubstep, the Europeans remain true to their techno roots. Despite the recent closure of Berlin’s notorious Bar 25, the label lives on and has been churning out some deliciously tripped out techno tracks, like Channel X’s remix of Sascha Braemar’s Nur Mal Kurz and Liviu Groza’s ‘Mangouste’.
As the temperature cools down and social gatherings move indoors, old favorites like Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald are making a comeback at wine bars and food-focused soirees. Spiced up with the occasional sprinkle of cozy vocal numbers like Broadcast’s ‘Come on Let’s Go’
and Susanna and the Magical Orchestra’s angelic covers of old rock hit like ‘Love Will Tear us Apart’, with a dash of Patrick Watson makes for music as soothing and warm as a hot toddy by candlelight.
