Awesome Tapes From Africa is a guy from Brooklyn who uploads cassettes of music from Africa. It is a simple idea, but it is executed really well. So well in fact that he spoke at a symposium at Pop Montreal last Weekend along with DJ Rupture and others about the relationship between 1st and 3rd world street music- at least I think that is what it was about. It might have also been about “globalism” and music. I still listen to side A of the David Kibe tape that I downloaded here often.
Also pertaining: DJ Rupture (recently mentioned on 90210!?) and his blog Mudd Up which often delves into music from Colombia, Morocco, and elsewhere. Definitely on the chin-stroking side of things but has been entertaining and thought provoking for a few years now. His DJ sets are often really rad too. I like him. Years ago he defended grime when dubstep started emerging and that won him points with me too
I really wanted to call this post “World music blogs ruin strangeness of world music” but that sounds like The Onion or something.
