Feathers Boutique

Feathers Boutique

I’ll be the first to admit it: I’m not a Texan. So how did I find myself with a closet full of western style dresses, cowboy boots and sky high pairs of high heels from the 70′s? I’ll blame it on two factors: the damn heat in this town, and the awesome vintage shopping.

Every city worth a damn has great vintage shopping, but if you want carefully “curated” stores, I have to believe that Austin is the best. The owners of the stores that dot South Congress have spent countless hours wading in filth at Salvation Armies in rural America so you don’t have to. My two personal addictions are Feathers Boutique and Prototype Vintage, two cozy spots right next to each other just off the main shopping drag in South Austin.

The ladies of Feathers offer a wild and dangerous array of dresses, boots and bellbottoms that are sit somewhere in the glorious crux of Stevie Nicks circa Rumours and the best of cowgirl chic. Prototype swings closer to straight mid-century modern style straight out of “Mad Men.”

Uncommon Objects

And hey, while I’m down there, I often find myself knee deep in serious vintage trinkets (and the occasional choice prairie girl outfit) at Uncommon Objects, the quintessential Austin spot for rusty treasures, strange Texas paraphernalia and gorgeous costume jewelry.

Now I just gotta make sure I don’t walk out of the house looking like Dolly Parton.
