
In aniticipation, perhaps, of Halloween, I saw a girl the other night dressed as Max from Where the Wild Things Are. The suit was perfect, down to the converse all-stars on her feet. I guess it says alot about how influential this movie really is. It’s only been in theatres a week and already its look and feel is resonating with this generation of 25-35 years olds. If this was hipster runoff, I’d call it a big meme already.
I actually saw the film a couple of nights ago, and it really is groundbreaking. It’s shot as if the director was another protagonist in the story, and not just a shadowy figure calling the shots. The interplay between realism of the camera work and the detailing of the art direction makes it intensely watchable.
Unlike 500 days of Summer. Note to producers: Please stop greenlighting empty films with boring scripts because you think they’ll appeal to a ‘hipster demographic’. A boring story isn’t made any less boring with the inclusion of a Joy division t-shirt…
