FreeLove Fenner Makes Me Want to be an Elf

Because Love is Free!!!

Because Real Love is Free!!!

Generally speaking, rock music is not my cup of tea, but occasionally a band comes along that really blows me away, and I can’t help but put their album on permanent rotation.  It becomes my soundtrack for life – I start singing along with the lyrics while they play, doing a capella versions in the shower, in back alleys on my bike, and walking up St-Denis.   FreeLove Fenner’s album ‘in the Bottle Garden’ is the first album of a non-electronic variety that has had this effect on me for quite some time.

The entire album clocks in at under 30 minutes length, but damn is it ever tasty.  Simple acoustic guitar riffs, recorder, drums and vocals creates the perfect blend of quaint happy songs.  ’Song for a New Elf, ‘Spirit, and ‘Felix’ are my personal favorites.  Seriously addictive, and a product of the Montreal Plateau.

More home-grown talent is on the horizon with the new minimal techno and micro-house label Monsieur Musique.  With renouned artists like Mateo Murphy already on board, this digital-only label is sure to gain momentum in the winter months.  I myself am gearing up for their launch party on November 28th at Les Pas Sages!

Also from Montreal is the fabulous diva Tiga, whose new track ’Beep Beep,’ is totally sick.   The funky beat creates an ironic juxtaposition with Tiga’s cold-hearted lyrics. He sings:  ”All I feel is an endless data stream / I see the eyes on the computer screen / Misinformation is surrounding me / It breaks me down / I’m on my knees,” a testament to the disconnection that results from society’s obsession with technology.  My personal favorite is the Loco Dice Remix.

More on the techno tip, and definitely far from Montreal, Magda has come up with a hell of a mix for Fabric.  Fabric 49, will be released officially on November 16th, 2009.  Inspired by Italian Horror flicks and the minimal sounds of Berlin, Detroit, and Canada’s M_nus, this multi-layered ‘artist album meets DJ mix’ contains an inspiring blend of dark growly basslines, bizarre spoken word fragments, wonky hi-hats, and tripped-out breakdowns and even includes an old Yello track – Heavy Whispers – on its impressive roster.
