Once a month, everyone awesome in Austin, Texas comes out and dances like a crazy person. Now entering its third year, the Second Sunday Sock Hop is a true sight to behold: kids usually too cool to even tap a foot at a show can be found flipping each other around and sweating like marathon runners.
So what makes it possible for these kids to let loose?
Reason #1: The vintage tunes!
Playing a variety of hyper danceable vintage records from the 50′s through the 70′s, this mixture of everything from funk to doowop to rockabilly is golden. My favorite musical discovery thus far has been the brilliant Booker T and the M.G.s.
Reason #2: The clothes!
There are a multitude of fashion possibilities here, all divine. I’ve seen girls with teased-out bouffant hairdo’s and go go boots, boys in bell bottoms, greaser couples…the list goes on and on.
Reason #3: The DJ’s! The Records!
I honestly don’t know where these guys dig up so much amazing vintage vinyl, but I can begin to take a gander…Austin’s record stores are ripe for the picking, with a multitude of obscure 45′s that are just screaming DANCE PARTY. My personal favorite spot in the ATX? End of an Ear in wonderfully funky South Austin.
