Two films have caught my attention lately though I haven’t seen either because they aren’t out: A single Man and A serious Man. Both are set in America in the 60′s, perhaps both in LA. What is interesting about the similarity between them is that they reflect the cultural shift in aesthetics toward classic and austere images. This is a sign of the cultural push away from ultra post-modern and fragmented art and design. Both seem sober, yet psychological, and both have a lead character who wears sharp frames which perhaps represent the boundaries of expression within society at this time…. perhaps not. I do imagine both to be extremely different in tone however as the Cohen brothers seem to make “black comedies” and Tom Ford is an elegant fashion designer.
