Why is HBO so reliably good?
One of the best of their documentaries recently was The Trials of Ted Haggard — about the evangelical Christian leader who lost everything when people found out he was sleeping and doing drugs with a male prostitute. It paints a surprisingly humanizing and complex portrait of Haggard, who gives filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi — Nancy Pelosi’s daughter — remarkable access to his life and story. Pelosi also made a great documentary called Right America: Feeling Wronged, also on HBO, where she followed John McCain’s campaign and interviewed conservatives.
Why HBO passed on Mad Men will remain a mystery — though I hope it isn’t a sign that they’re loosing their touch. Speaking of which, like everyone else, I cannot wait for the third season to start. To think that I hated the show when it first came out because it was all style and no substance.
After a several season hiatus, I have started watching Curb Your Enthusiasm again. Larry David continues to be amazing, even though that movie he did with Woody Allen looks awful.
