“Aged to Perfection”

Two films have come to mind recently as being ready for a revisit. The first is Steven Soderbergh’s Sex, Lies, and Videotape. This film is ridiculously stylish and pyschosexual in that James Spadery way.  Every shot is a unique portrait of interesting clothing and interior design, particularly when Andy Macdowell is talking on the phone in front of the huge window with the giant plant outside (I tried to find an image to no avail). There is so much good stuff to look at here, including a good look involving thick suspenders, as well as a pastel-colored modern art themed bedroom. Seriously, this movie is amazing looking.

The next is the underwater sci-fi thriller The Abyss. I asked my motion graphics friend if she would make a video for us based on The Abyss, and the mutating water-face, but she said no way- that would take too long to make it look good- meaning it is STILL hard to make special effects that good. For some reason this movie is just right right now- tense and transcendental, but also kinda like a swimming pool at night that you scuba dive in. These movies would be part of a monthly column on old movies that I should write entitled “Aged to perfection: movies that have finally matured into classics”
