British TV Awesomeness

spaced

What is it about the Brits that make them awesome at making weird, gut-bustingly funny television? I’m not sure, but I can’t get enough of that wacky, out there comedy. Recently I’ve been watching a lot of Spaced now that it’s all on Hulu (glorious). Written by Simon Pegg, the crossover genius behind Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, this situational comedy is just so simple in its brilliance. The characters are incredibly rich and wacky. My personal favorite is Brian, a conceptual artist who is always throwing black paint at canvases and listening to soundtracks filled with primal screams. (Why aren’t there more artists on sitcoms? They’re hilarious!)

But as much as I love Spaced, it’s the Mighty Boosh that reins supreme as one of my favorite television shows of all time. Although I don’t have cable, I hear they’re playing it now on Adult Swim. So why haven’t these guys become famous in America yet? They’re huge in England! The show is a wild and adventurous romp through the strange minds of collaborators Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding, and features two of the most amazing characters of all times: a shaman named Naboo (Noel Fielding’s brother, Michael) and a talking gorilla named Bollo. Check out my favorite scene of all time here.

From the same wacky minds behind the Mighty Boosh, Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace is another bizarre British tv phenomenon. Darkplace, a shortlived miniseries, plays on the strange shlocky qualities of 80′s Steven King made-for-tv specials, but taken to the extreme. A lot of the series is on Youtube. It’s amazing.
