The West Coast is the ‘Best Coast’

best-coast

There will always be a place in my heart for hazy, lazy pop music.I love Best Coast. I can’t get enough of their (her???) song When I’m With You. I’ll just refer to it as “her” music, since in an interview she also states that she writes all of the melodies and harmonies and lyrics. Her first couple of singles are all great, but the addition of live drums on the Black Iris label is certainly welcome. It’s the perfect music to listen to while wrapped up in bed during the past couple of outrageously cold and rainy days here in Los Angeles. It’s like a warm, enveloping musical blanket. Or something. She feeds her cat Taco Bell, which is kind of gross, but she writes beautiful beautiful pop songs.

From the opposite side of the country, not too far from where I grew up, the Big Troubles are recording music that’s not too dissimilar, which has also been receiving heavy rotation in my life. Their single Freudian Slips is probably one of the catchiest songs I’ve heard in a long time. They have a couple of 7″s supposedly scheduled to come out soon, and I can’t wait to hear them.
