TAKE IVY

The classic preppie look is not exactly a new trend or even an obscure one. Even the unobservant surely spotted it in Vampire Weekend press photos, or the overabundance of Sperry Topsiders amongst young men (even women). HOWEVER, among the “American-trad” clothing scene it seems to be prepared for a second, more authentic looking flourish. The book “Take Ivy,” which was published in Japan in the mid 60′s has become a relic to the era of Ivy League Fashion, and a highly collectible antique (costing around 2,000 dollars). Here is a link to a blog that has scanned the coveted images which act as a fashion template for men into the look. You will see many Ralph Laurenish staples- slim chinos- often pegged or tapered, penny loafers, white socks. White socks have never seemed so cool. Although an American look, I think that the first people I noticed wearing these looks were Swedish (who are often leading the way in menswear). An example can be seen in this Tough Alliance image, where the Swedes are dressing in the classic American look. I suspect that this Spring the work-wear/flannel wearing guys will be wearing pegged chinos, or just pegging their pants in general.
