The internet was abuzz in the months and weeks prior to the release of the preview to Google Wave, and once it went live it seemed like you could have sold invites on eBay they were such a hot commodity. Once people got in, the web let out an exasperated WTF?
Every time I log in I have new contacts in my sidebar, and many of them I have no idea who they are. I think I might have interacted with them once or twice through Gmail, but it was likely months if not years go. And I’m sitting currently sitting on 24 invites that I probably couldn’t pay people to take. I thought maybe it was just me who didn’t get it, but I have a good number of friends who are either bloggers or developers who are just as lost as me about it. It’s almost become an in-joke for the tech crowd.
Google made up for the Wave flub by introducing real-time search, which is obviously an answer to the pressure Twitter has created.
The internet has also proven the age-old saying “opinions are like assholes: everyone’s got one” in the past month with the end-of-the-decade lists. It’s been annoying sometimes because there have been lists I wouldn’t even dream of, let alone care about, but it’s also given me a nice sense of nostalgia to think back to where I was 10 years ago and all of the things that have influenced me over the past decade. More on that in my music post.
