This year i listened to the Crystal Stilts record a ton (i’m listening to it now) and also Kurt Vile, who i discovered around the same time in May, and am pretty sure that talking to him would be like having a chat with the Computer Who Wore Tennis Shoes.
It’s possibly a hangover from the on/off Ariel Pink obsession i’ve had for the last 4 or 5 years but i love music that sounds immense, even though it’s recorded on shit equipment. I think it’s called Lo-fi. I guess it’s the triumph of the artistic vision over physical limitations or whatever. But one man bands like the last three i just mentioned there just kill me. I get the feeling with Kurt that he’s playing to be heard, and and the same time would be happy if no-one ever listened to it. He’s a man with shit to get off his chest and who’s found the means to do it. It’s modest and ambitious at the same time. Oh fuck, it’s great, but Constant Hitmaker is better than his recent record that he recorded with a full band. thanks to Sandy for telling me about him at the start of the summer.
