Children of 221B Baker Street unite, you’ve nothing to lose but your pipes, your opium and possibly your lives. The long awaited Sherlock Holmes remake has finally hit the screen and despite the lingering thought that Guy Ritchie might have tried to turn it into a Victorian era version of Snatch, it’s quite a blast.

Robert Downey Jr pulls off Holmes impeccably. I had t admit to a great deal of bias in hearing he was going to be playing the master detective. I grew up watching Holmes on TV played by legendary British actor Jeremy Brett. My Holmes has always been less comedic and slightly more esoteric, a child of the lost rivers of London, something that Downey Jr touches on gently but doesn’t embrace in the film.

Jude Law was great, and I hate Jude Law. Avoiding his usual attempts at snide, sleazy and salacious, he plays Watson unlike any role he has before, straight. Earnest, polite and actually likable.
Rachael McAdams is a winner too as Holmes’ nemesis/love interest Irene Adler. I can’t help the fact that she’s dreamy but she starts being just as mysterious as Holmes to the point of which you can actually take her seriously as he kind of girl that a master detective would fall for.
It’s fun! And I cant say that about a great deal of movies these days. London looks lovely, the story begs for a sequel, what more could you ask for?
