Wire Fans Eagerly Await Treme

Vanessa | February 23rd, 2010

My obsession with The Wire continues — it’s no doubt the best series ever made, and I continue to be an evangelist. I’m not the only one who thinks it’s so great. Harvard, Berkeley and a bunch of other schools are offering courses focused on The Wire this semester.

There is a growing interest in the real people on whom the characters in the show were based, such as a movie (that looks absolutely terrible) about the real Avon Barksdale, an interview in Vice with the real Omar Little (who, quite depressingly, is not actually gay), and a Guardian UK article about the real Stringer Bell. (The real Marlo Stanfield story is a lot more dour.)

It’s a good thing that David Simon has a new show coming out on HBO, Treme, set in New Orleans. Though the trailer keeps things pretty mysterious, it will be about musicians and other regular people trying to rebuild their lives after Hurricane Katrina. Luckily, Buck from the Wire (Wendell Pierce) will be starring.
