Toronto Festivals Showcase Great Films All Year Round

BB | February 18th, 2010

It’s the off-season for Toronto’s major film festivals, however, three of our biggest are still holding special screenings around town to keep the locals happy.

This month the Toronto International Film Festival is doing its part to support the local film industry by screening Canada’s top 10 feature length and short films of 2009 at the Art Gallery of Ontario’s Jackman Hall.   Some of the award winners to be screened are  Alexandre Franchi’s The Wild Hunt, Jacob Tierney’s The Trotsky and Jacob Tierney’s Polytechnique.  A few shorts not to be missed are Pedro Pires’ Danse Macabre, Jamie Travis’ The Armoire and Chris Landreth’s latest animated short, The Spine.

HotDocs, Toronto’s International documentary film festival, is bringing a great Canadian-made doc to their monthly DocSoup screening, Last Train Home.  Directed by Lixin Fan, Last Train Home won the best feature length documentary award at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam and will screen at Toronto’s venerable independent theatre, The Bloor Cinema.

Finally, the Images Festival, held annually in the spring as a showcase of experimental videos, films, new media and installation art, is going Icelandic this month (very appropriate given Toronto icy winter wind) with a special pre-season screening of Bjork’s Voltaic: The Volta Tour Live in Paris and Reykjavik. The film of Bjork’s concert performances will screen in the newest independent theatre to open in Toronto, The Acacia Centre.   Check out the Voltaic trailer.
