Sometimes I’m not sure if I’m still in Chicago or whether I’m picking up TV stations from Canada. Though I’m certainly not complaining. With the Blackhawks a near lock to make the playoffs — and a contender that analysts say have a legitimate chance to make a push for the Stanley Cup — hockey fever has taken over in Chicago. There have been nearly 80 consecutive sell outs at the United Center, and home ice Blackhawk hockey is back on TV after years in the dark under the late owner Bill Wirtz, who blacked out home telecasts in Chicago. After his death his son Rocky took over the franchise and the first order of business was to restore home ice Blackhawks games on TV. The expirement has proven successful as Comcast Sports Net continually draws great ratings during telecasts — so much so that the network has added 18 out-of-market games to this season’s TV schedule.
The Blackhawks are getting so popular that their webisodes of BHTV, which feature short packages of highlights, funny prank videos, and behind the scenes access to the players, has been turned into a broadcast television show, the second episode of which aired Feb. 14.
On top of all the Blackhawks coverage, the Olympics are providing even more hockey access. While in past Olympics years hockey coverage on TV often only included medal rounds, now every minute of every hockey game will be available at NBCOlympics.com! And that goes for men and women. With this much hockey, I’ll have little time for any other TV this month.
So much for hockey being No. 4 on America’s list of most-popular sports…
