This One’s For All Of Us

I love the internet. It may sound daft but for as much self indulgent crap this new media playing field has allowed us to develop, it has also allowed men and women to come together to achieve the sorts of things that were unable to happen before.

I’m currently in awe of the organized magic that is the individuals behind This One Is On Us. The Nine Inch Nails fan community that have created “Another Version of the Truth” – a 3 disc DVD set.

Spawned from the “unofficial release of 400 GB of video shot by the NIN video team during their Lights in the Sky tour, this dvd has brought together web programmers, video editors, graphic designers, organizers and logistics people form around the world to make a really awesome dvd.

While some might question why the efforts couldn’t be better spent, this by the people, for the people mandate has been a refreshing response to not only the corporate music industry response to web 2.0 but the apathy of most music fans.

For those of us who have a decent net connection and couldn’t get the chance to see the band, it’s a score that redeems faith in man and industry. For the web however, it’s a sign that perhaps the talk of mass digital collaboration for good as opposed to just for the glory of the dollar sign might actually be a viable option as we roll deep into 2010.
