Twitter didn’t resist too long the opportunity to earn some money. Soon we’ll see ads on the largest microblogging web-site.
Twitter’s head Evan Williams officially announced that the new advertising platform will be launched in a month. It will remind to some extent contextual advertising of Google where commercial ads will be tied to search requests on Twitter. The format of the ads will repeat the recording format in microblogs so this will be a short message with a maximum length of one hundred and forty characters. The good news for ad-haters will be that advertising will only appear in search results thus reading microblog you will not see much advertising. Many people feared that the owners of Twitter will follow the path of their Japanese version which started selling ordinary banners in 2008. But the head office proved that this traditional ways of advertising are not interesting to them.
So social networks are good not only in attracting new audience but also in shaping new ways of monetisation. What are we doing here? Let’s start another facebook!
