Dear Sunday TV programming: Spread the love

I often brag that I don’t watch much TV. The longest stretch I’ll spend in front of the tube is on Sunday evenings when my shows are in-season. Most of them can all be found on HBO, but starting this month I’ll actually have to change the channel. Why? “Breaking Bad” is back. When Season One came out a few years ago, my roommate at the time told me about how amazing the show was, but I never got around to checking it out. Most of my exposure to Bryan Cranston was his work as Dr. Tim Whatley, the semi-perverted dentist of Jerry Seinfeld who converted to Judaism for the jokes, and Hal on “Malcolm in the Middle.” I hadn’t really put much into him being a serious actor. I luckily stumbled upon a “Breaking Bad” Season One marathon last year five minutes into the first episode the day before the second season started and spent my afternoon into early the next morning watching it. I still cringe at the thought of Geico commercials.

But I’m extremely excited to see what’s in store for Walter White this season. His wife had left him at the end of the last season and from the teasers I’ve seen it looks like a lot of drama is going to unfold in the coming weeks. It’s just weird having to change the channel for once.

I don’t own a TiVo, but now I have two shows that run on separate channels in the same time slot. I’m going to choose “Breaking Bad” over HBO’s new “Entourage”-esque “How to Make it in America,” but I feel one step closer to the stereotypical fat, lazy American now that I’ll actually have a reason to use my On Demand feature from my cable to catch up on “How to Make It.” And that I’ll be parked in front of the TV for two whole hours watching “The Pacific” and then “Breaking Bad.” Then it’ll expand to three when “Treme” comes out.

But at least it’s just Sunday.
