Per my girlfriend’s request, I recently watched Dziga Vertov’s Man With a Movie Camera. The film is a fantastic exploration of experimental techniques like freeze frames, jump cuts, split screens, Dutch angles, extreme close-ups, tracking shots, footage played backwards, and stop motion animation. While it seems like it could be too intellectual to really make for an enjoyable experience, Vertov brings a real sense of play to his experimentation, which makes the movie almost heart-warming.
