A few years ago at about the same time, Chicago Juke-house, and Houston’s Chopped and Screwed rap music caused small obsessions among music fans outside of the regional scenes. Then, as it does, the buzz subsided. Recently these sounds seem to be getting a second chance at popularity with some awesome mutations.
Juke is like ghetto-house but from Chicago and more R & B (popularized by DJ Nephets and DJ Deeon) and usually at around 140 bpm and higher (fast). Lately a lot of post-dubstep artists such as El-Vis 1990 have been obsessed with juke and mixing it in their higher tempo sets. In the process the producers get it fantastically wrong and we get tracks such as this…
A lot of people have been talking about DJ Slugo, seems his music is finally getting message-board swapped and thus becoming available to DJs outside of Chicago.
Chopped and Screwed is basically codeine cough syrup (‘sizzurp’) inspired slowed down rap music popularized by the late DJ Screw. Artists such as Salem have been “screwing down” people’s songs as remixes (as well as their own), and the internet has begun buzzing it again.
With the re-emergence we get amazing edits such as this.
