Admittedly, it’s been a while since I’ve been to a traditional theater for a movie. I’ve probably seen four or five in the past year. And honestly, it’s because I don’t know why I would spend $10 for my ticket, then another $15 for sugar water (Coke) and popcorn. I would rather wait for it to come out on Blu-Ray or DVD and watch it in the comfort of my home and food from my own pantry. I’m a bit of a health nut, and while it’s easy to skip the popcorn and sneak in a healthier snack in my pocket, I refuse to pay $4-$5 for a bottle of tap water.
But I am interested in the concept of non-traditional theaters like Hollywood Palms Cinema, which I wrote about a few months ago. To me, if you’re going to have to spend X dollars on a movie in a theater, you might as well make an event out of it and enjoy the experience with a better menu than stale popcorn and nachos, with the possibility of adult beverages.
I also very much like Brew and View at The Vic, where you can watch classic films and drink. They regularly show double-features from the same director, like ‘Kill Bill’ 1 and 2 back to back, or a newer film from a director followed by a classic, like Scorsese’s ‘Shutter Island’ paired with ‘Taxi Driver’. These concepts are relatively obscure and I see a lot of potential in reaching new audiences there.
I have no interest in 3D films. Roger Ebert has the best explanation of why. I see 3D being limited to specific genres like summer blockbusters, and those aren’t the type of movies I spend money to watch in the theater. If I am drinking or enjoying a meal like I explained above, I’m not going to want to wear something that might make me vomit all over myself due to motion sickness.
