Miami is way behind basically every other major city in bike-friendliness. While there are a decent number of pretty vistas to ride past, actually taking to city streets can be a kamikaze experience. In a particularly gruesome incident this past January, a man riding on an island path extremely popular with cyclists was killed by a hit-and-run drunk driver — around 8 a.m. on a Sunday morning!

Still, in the face of reckless drivers, poorly engineered streets, and blazing heat, the bike scene in Miami continues to grow, and slight positive changes seem to be on the horizon. In the meantime, slowly growing small, informal groups continue to organize rides around town, and many of these now end at bicycle-friendly bars.

Keirin Cycles, a bicycle shop on South Beach, has ended recent races at a pseudo-dive in that neighborhood, Frankie’s Hideaway. Other alleycat races, organized by promoters like IAmYourVillain, have ended at the News Lounge, back near the Design District on the mainland. This is more ideal, as it’s a largely open-air, relaxed spot with plenty of places to chain up your bike and relax.

By far the most bike-friendly bar around, though, is the simply named, um, Bar, on Northeast 14th Street downtown, near popular clubs like the Vagabond and White Room. The place is operated by the people behind the nearby art gallery O.H.W.O.W., and every two months, the decor inside completely changes, redone by a local artist of choice.

Bar is now the new ending point of choice for Critical Mass rides, as bicycles are allowed inside, with plenty of space to put them safely aside in the bar’s back patio. What’s more, at the end of events, the place offers a dollar off well cocktails and beers for cyclists. Luckily, they don’t have to worry about drinking and driving a car.
