Practical Reasons For Why We’re All Half-Naked in Miami

Shorts with heels: Strange but logical in Miami. (Photo CC by 2.0, via emilio labrador on Flickr)

Summer may not be technically here on the calendar, but the summer temperatures have already arrived in Miami. They’re only going to get worse as the months wear on, making getting dressed extremely difficult. If you plan to go out anywhere in the evening where there are other human bodies around, you basically have to wear as little as possible.

That’s why the kind of thing that would never fly for evening wear in, say, New York or somewhere else, is totally acceptable here. Shorts? Sure. But not sloppy ones. Nice shorts with a decent blouse and high heels, or boots, are totally acceptable — even for dinner, at some places.
Rompers are back this summer again too, because when the temperature hits about 85 it’s easier just to throw on one piece of fabric and be done with it. The concept of rompers in “nice” fabrics like silk is funny to me, but they’re increasingly around at night.
The latest thing, too, seems to be the old early-90s staple, the skort, somewhere between a skirt and billowing shorts. I’m not sure how I feel about these yet; they seem to be flattering only on a small percentage of the female population. Still, between these and stirrup pants, it’s clear that it’s been enough time for the ’90s to become the new ’80s.
