Surprise! Hollywood still sucks

Well Iron Man 2 was a fucking disappointment. Hot Tub Time Machine was funny in the bits with Crispin Glover in them (I’m not too sure about Crispin Glover. He seems like a self important nut-job, but i like almost everything he’s in). I watched the first 20 minutes of Robin Hood before realising that it was in greek (and boring). Apparently, I am Love with Tilda Swinton is the greatest movie anyone who’s seen it has seen, but I haven’t.   So for stuff released recently, I don’t think theres anything worth talking about.

I did however see Mike Leigh’s Naked recently and that is worth talking about, and singing about, and maybe doing a little dance in honour of.

I never knew that David Thewlis was a real actor before. I thought he was a celebrity boyfriend that Heat magazine had made up in the 90′s to increase circulation (like a more inane JT Leroy), but no, he’s an actor, and he can act.

For all it’s faults, for all it feels like a play more than a film and for all the dialogues seem forced and unbelievable, it’s still one of the best films i’ve ever seen about mental illness. Lars Von Triers’ The Idiot’s would be the other one. Like the Idiots, the main idea seems to be that mental illness affects everyone, from security guards, to hipsters, to nurses. It’s message is that everybody, no matter how they appear, is fucked in the head.

The soundtrack is also incredible, and everyone seems to dress exactly the same as they do today. Simply, its a film of substance that also has it’s own style that still feels relevant today. Something i think that couldn’t be further from Hollywood.
