Sometimes Fake Can be Just as Sweet

Even though I’m not vegan, I find myself eating at plenty of vegan restaurants all the time. And sometimes, it seems, they are able to make desserts even more delicious than their butter laden counterparts. For the past few years, I’ve been having Thanksgiving dinner at the apartment of some friends, and every year one of their mothers sends a vegan apple pie from Babycakes in New York.Well now that friend is living somewhere in New Jersey, and Los Angeles has its very own Babycakes in her stead. When my brother, who is vegan, came to visit recently we took a trip downtown on the subway to get some things, since he seems to be interested only in visiting Rozz Williams’ grave and eating outrageous quantities of vegan pastries whenever he comes to town. A little pricey, the brownie cupcake thing I had was pretty delicious, and probably better than any butter laden brownie I’ve had in a while. Stumptown coffee service is a pleasant surprise.

KindKreme opened on Cahuenga recently. Since it’s in the same plaza as my favorite Poquito Mas, I thought I may as well give it a try when it finally opened. Well, it was the tiniest and most expensive scoop of ice cream I’ve ever had. It was a nice surprise that that they don’t make their ice cream out of soymilk, but from mixes of almond milk, cashew butter, coconut milk and other things. And the flavor I got—coffee with cocoa nibs—was pretty delicious; very rich and with a nice strong coffee flavor. Unfortunately, $4 for an unusually small amount of ice cream is not something I find reasonable.
