Internet generated “future-punks” or “tumblr-punks” (my term) are here to stay, and they are more nihilistic and irreverent than all generations of punk put together.
It began with 8-bit artists like Narwhalz, Gay Against You, and Extreme Animals, but current torch-bearers like Aids-3D, Pictureplane (the most tasteful and popular) and Sewn Leather carry it further alongside many others. It’s a combination of all the moving gifs at Dump.fm, the messageboards at 4chan, gay club culture, Terrence Koh, dark internet corners, such as uploaded images of Iraq soldiers huffing duster, or crip teenagers smoking PCP in the ghetto, trance music, poorly html’d new-age websites, and general depravity. I stayed at Narwhalz, a converted crackhouse turned artspace, entitled “The Church of Crystal Light”, a couple of years ago and the bathroom had no shower, and a concrete floor with standing water. In order to turn on the light you had to pull a dirty Popple hung from a cord. This could be the end of “art” as we know it. The DJ sets (at such clubs as the newly formed Cyberia) are a clusterf*** of trance anthems, gothic bondage electro, and really gangster rap. I hope any of these reference points make sense cuz this piece could just as easily go for 5 pages as it could be a long list of hyperlinks.
