Why, for the love of God, hadn’t anyone told me about the awesomeness of David Byrne’s 1986 musical film True Stories until a few weeks ago? This film features an unbeatable array of things I love– cheesy interpretations of Texas culture, John Goodman, and rock n’ roll? Does it get better than that?Actually, yes, yes it does. Most of this incredible film tosses linear plot lines out the window in favor of raucous, group jam sessions featuring songs by the king of new wave himself. If only there was a soundtrack for this film, seriously. The songs were released by the Talking Heads, but performances by the amazing cast were never released.
My favorite part of the film is the epic performance by John Goodman in his first major film role. How couldn’t you love a character like his, on the hunt for love no matter what it takes. “I’m 6′ 3″ and maintain a consistent panda bear shape,” is his major self advertisement line. If you want to see him in action, don’t miss his unbelievable rendition of Byrne’s song’s “People Like Us,” here.
