Having been DJing as long as I can remember, there’s two things that have really continued to hold my interest, ass shaking and low-end theory.
Vancouver has embraced dancehall, dubstep, jungle and even post hop beat wonky things. But if all goes to plan, the next big thing should hopefully be the degenerate house that is mark of the UK Funky scene.
People like Ben Ulis, Cure and I have been playing it with some frequency, looking towards the Rinse FM sponsored mania of names like Geeneus, Scratcha DVA and Marcus Nasty as well as the 130 bpm excursions of dubstep producers like Ramadanmann, Shortstuff and Grievous Angel. For a city that’s grown up on house and taken to UK bass like a fish to water, the garage, soca and grime inflected rhythms work a treat.
Canada continues to do well, Montreal’s Bowly has just had a record come out on Geiom’s Berkane Sol, has a record due on Cooly G’s Dub Organiser and was for many the surprise highlight of the recent Mutek festival. I’m just waiting for the vast assortment of Vancouver producers that are currently tearing it up at 140 bpm reject the current hegemony of festival loving wobblers, switch it up and go a little slower. Who knows what a little funk in your diet might do?
