Thursday Nights with Open Roof Films

When I was a teenager we used to sneak mickeys of rum into the cinema to top off our mega sized Cokes from the snack stand… ah, fond memories. Having left my sketchy drinking days behind me, it is not too often that you can enjoy alcoholic beverages while watching a professional screening. That’s where Open Roof Films comes to the rescue. They host outdoor film screenings in the Amster’dam Brewery parking lot every Thursday night, serving – you guessed it, Toronto’s own locally brewed Amster’dam beer.

In addition, a band gets the pleasure to perform before the screening.  The most recent line up featured The Little Black Dress opening for the screening of Bruce McDonald’s This Movie is Broken.  Set in Toronto and revolving around a concert performance by Broken Social Scene, This Movie is Broken follows a young couple through their rock-show love affair.  I thought that the premise was a little corny but was intrigued by how the film seemed to embrace Toronto, the city itself and the talent that comes out it.

Having been told that I was on the guest list for this one I met up with my friends to go check it out.  All was going as planned when my friend got a text message that there were no longer free drinks – should we still go?  I was game because I wanted to see the movie but the general opinion was that the movie sucked anyway and without the promise of free beer there were other things to do.  Oh well… it still sounds like not a bad way to spend a nice summer evening free drinks or not.  I think I will check it out next time around.
