Full disclosure: At my full-time gig, part of my responsibility is to edit a daily music blog, Crossfade, which is meant to cover all things in the Miami music and nightlife scene. I would welcome some more independent competition, and I enjoy exchanging with other people who run similar local blogs — but there aren’t a lot of them.
Miami is still behind other major cities in the music blogging scene. Every once in a while, I’ll get excited that a new site starts up, but disappointed later when the posts taper off and eventually disappear. This is especially true in summer, when things, and people, get slow-w-w-w in the city. Still, a few sites keep on trucking, and bless ‘em for that. Here are three of my favorites that are focused specifically on music, and are updated frequently:
Off the Radar, offtheradarmusic.com
This is a Miami-based blog, but it isn’t restricted to covering just Miami music. Rather, they feature a number of national (and international) emerging bands and tracks, as well as the occasional specifically locally oriented news. The strengths here are the number of enthusiastic contributors, and a sharp curatorial taste overall.
The305, the305.com
This is the ultimate source for everything in local hip-hop, or national shows going on here, underground or otherwise. It also features the occasional streetwear coverage. The best thing though, are the number of free tracks and even themed mixes put together by the site’s author, Dro. (Full disclosure: On the strength of his site, we also recruited him to contribute to Crossfade.)
Roofless Records, rooflessrex.tumblr.com
This is officially the blog for a local d.i.y. label (Roofless Records, as the name implies), but head of the whole outfit, Matt Preira, is a musical evangelist above all. To generalize, he has esoteric tastes, which seem to lean towards the psychedelic, sludgy, and just flat-out weird. Rather than using his blog to promote his own releases and shows, he posts related articles of interest, show reports, photos, videos, and other ephemera. Most importantly, he does so pretty regularly.
