Although Chrome bags, carabiners, and cut off shorts are ubiquitous in this city, there’s a new movement in the bike coalition that’s dedicated to elevating the look on two wheels.
I first noticed when Public Bikes made their South of Market debut. The “European style” frames are attractive because — besides being adorable — they strip away the bike shop ‘tude. Oh, and Public’s website features Camper-commissioned heels, specially made for pedaling.
Then there’s the dandy San Francisco Tweed cycle group. I can stand behind any movement comprised of scarves, blazers, skirts, and page-boy caps. When a jacket is needed for every season in this city, why not throw on a nice one?
Personally, I can’t think of anything better than passing the standard bike boy in a red skirt and ballet flats on my vintage Univega with a basket.
