Return to Shoegaze

Washed out vocals are to indie rock as auto-tune is to urban top 40. Lo-fi, dreamy vocals seemed to be the sound of the summer – for many bands. An interesting sound, crossing my love affairs with My Bloody Valentine, The Cocteau Twins and The Shangri-las, Ariel Pink and Beach House were getting a lot of devotion.

But then it just kept coming, as if all of a sudden indie kids felt like they too could sing without talent (something that urban producers flogged to death with auto-tune). What is this return to Shoegaze – or ‘Nu-gaze‘ as some would like to call it? A current trend of raw emotion, distorted layering and lyrics being secondary? As fall sets in I wonder if this will sound carry into the darker, colder months. It might get too melancholy for me – I’ll have a side of pop with that.
