I Left My Heart in the Red Vic

I’ve been traveling around a bit lately and in every city I visit, I try to find a little independent movie theatre that’s as packed with charm and good films as the Red Vic in San Francisco.

The Red Vic is nearly perfect. It’s got ancient padded bench seating, chamomile tea, peanut butter cookies and popcorn with nutritional yeast on offer, and a rules-of-the-theatre-intro that gets the regulars laughing every time. The selection is a mix of almost new and nostalgic, with annual showings of movies like Harold and Maude and The Big Lebowski. Their schedule is likely on the coffee table of everyone within a three mile radius. It’s my favorite part of Haight Street. and one The history is really baked in, not manufactured for tourist consumption.

They commission awesome posters for the films they show, like this one for The Fantastic Mr. Fox by Zoltron.
