Cameos by Cameos

Wherever you look this season, cameos are everywhere! The cameo was created in the Victorian era, originally carved from stone and set in gold or brass. I would love to own this incredible Victorian necklace.

Cameos continued to be created from other materials — such as glass, plastic and carved bakelite. Some jewelry companies still manufacture imitation cameos, but they are often of poor quality. Many 1940′s brass and shell cameos look remarkably like Victorian jewelry because of the ‘Victorian revival’ in jewelry reproduction in that era.

An assortment of beautiful and authentic cameos. It’s still possible to find the vintage ones in many shops in Portland, mostly  in brooch or necklace form. I find the rings to be a little more rare. New companies are using the cameo image on tote bags, t-shirts, and underwear. Whatever form they take, cameos are everywhere right now!
