The Right Specs

Now that sunglass season is over, it’s time to worry about the spectacles that actually allow you to see. Laying down $400 plus is never ideal — and thankfully no longer necessary. The team behind the awesome and inexpensive glasses manufacturer, Warby Parker, did a little research into the high price of seeing well. They found that regardless of brand, most of the glasses market is controlled by just a few big companies; that keeps prices of glass and plastic high. By simply manufacturing their own pairs and selling them on their website, Warby Parker is able to offer their styles at less than $100 a pop. Not only that, but for every pair they sell, they’ll donate anther pair to a person in need.

When you decide which pair you want, they’ll ship them to you to try, or you can stop by somewhere hip enough to have all the styles. Our local outpost is a boutique called The Perish Trust on Divisadero in NoPa. My boyfriend was so excited by the selection that he bought two pairs.

Three out of my four roommates now wear Warby Parker, and they will certainly get my business next time I’m in the market. But for the time being, I still have some miles to put on the old pair–you know, because of how much I ended up shelling out for them.
