The Football Drama

The team on Friday Night Lights

Friday Night Lights is not a guilty pleasure of mine. It’s entertainment, it’s educational, and it occasionally moves me to tears.  When I moved to Texas I didn’t know what football could mean to people.  In Texas, high school football isn’t just another after school activity. It’s a passion. A religion.

Friday Night Lights makes me feel like I’m learning something, like I’m an delving into the cultural study of a state.  In Texas, football makes the world turn.  Friday Night Lights follows the lives of the residents of Dillon, Texas whose lives are lived, it seems, in the shadow of the score board.  Every high school drama has a twist, and this one is the weekly game.

Romance and football drive the intrigue of Friday Night Lights

With new characters and the anticipation of a lot of drama on and off the field, the start of Season 5 has not disappointed. Granted, sometimes the plot gets muddy and a little dubious, but the characters never disappoint, they’ll even surprise you once in a while.  It might be a bit of a soap opera, but it’s damn well done.
