One of the best surprises in the post-hyphy world of Bay Area Rap is that the members of the Pack are totally nuts and make really psychedelic post hip-hop that is more like stream of consciousness acid ranting than MC-ing. Think Lil Wayne slow, but with less coherence, and Soulja Boy childishness. The beats are informed and often reference new-age and synthy stuff that indie nerds are obsessed with (sometimes even with Ariel Pink or Salem Samples). The tracks are also truly dark. Indie and rap music are becoming ever-similar and nobody in NY can stop saying “Swag.” My Facebook feed is often filled with links that are simply introduced as “Swag.” It’s just everywhere and its so easy to obsess over the word. I am obsessed, and though I try not to, I always talk about “swag,” but when you listen to songs like this it’s hard not to:
or this super harsh and awesome track
