The Keys to Vancouver May Be the Letter W and the Number 2

Kuma | December 21st, 2010

The Woodward’s building, running from Cambie to Carral and bridged by Hastings and Cordova, has a tremendous place of history in Vancouver and after years of chaos and madness, has finally been reborn.

Originally home to the legendary Woodward department store, this territory now encompasses a bright new set of iconic developments, the most inspiring being W2.

W2 is a globally networked community media arts centre in Vancouver’s DTES (Downtown Eastside). It’s what appears in city’s across Europe, but never in Vancouver, until now.

A cultural hub, a party space, a room in which the community can grow, all this and so much more. Having hosted everything from top flight dubstep talent to producer forums and video installations, this wedge on the edge of Vancouver’s downtown east-side is preparing a bright future for the city’s cutting edge arts, culture and thought. There’s nothing else like it in the city and after years of hustling to get it up and running, it has taken its place as a beacon. Vancouver finally comes into its own.
